The "Courage" Story

This piece was created for an AAW show with the theme, "Step Up to the Plate." The text elements are pierced through the bat walls and they include important places and people in Jackie Robinson’s life.

The story of Jackie Robinson is one of constantly "Stepping Up to the Plate" and not just on the baseball diamond. His legacy is the inspiration he gave to athletes and people of all colors. His path-breaking entry into the major leagues, seven years before the US Supreme Court's ruling on Brown vs. Board of Education, stands as a brilliant symbol of America's struggle with racism and the hope for racial harmony. Perhaps his most famous quote best expresses his personal philosophy...

"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."
